More Than 400 Participants From Private Sectors, Government and Non-Profit Organisations Gathered At The Event

Indonesia Business Links (IBL) held the 3rd International Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on Sep 29-30, 2010 at Balai Kartini Exhibition and Convention Center, Jakarta. The two-day conference was themed "Building Multi Sector Partnerships for Sustainable Development"

Opened by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Boediono, the international conference activities brought about 80 speakers and facilitators who are CSR practitioners from Indonesia and International agencies that focus on CSR activities. Interesting topics discussed at an international conference this time including corporate governance and transparency, local economic development, human capital development, environmental protection, as well as conflict and disaster risk reduction. Vice President Boediono in his speech requested all parties to support poverty eradication and private firms to collaborate with the government to alleviate poverty through corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. In addition to the following the discussion in plenary and breakout sessions area, visitors can also enjoy CSR platform by 60 exhibitors around the conference area.

Noke Kiroyan, Chairman of the Board of patrons IBL, said, "This year's event is more successful than the two previous conferences in 2006 and 2008, both in the number of participants and the goals”. The conference is also able to bring together multi stakeholders to exchange ideas to achieve mutual understanding about CSR trends today. "From the discussions involving the various parties over the past two days, lot of positive things we gathered. We will continue to publish the results and recommendations that we have on CSR to public and community” said Noke.

IBL International partners, including the International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) based in the UK, Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) from the U.S., Centre for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), International Labour Organization (ILO), Embassy of Canada, the ASEAN Foundation and other partners in the Asia supported the event by bringing international and regional perspective for CSR practitioners in Indonesia.

Although CSR term is popular among stakeholders in Indonesia, however, the implementation of CSR in this country faces many obstacles. Based on research conducted by the IBL in 2008, at least four existing CSR problems emerged on the ground, namely: no identical understanding of CSR, CSR activities are wrongly perceived by stakeholders as charity, companies are often subject to high demand by the community, and lack of trust between government, business, and community organizations on CSR.

Yanti T. Koestoer, Executive Director of IBL, said, "One key to overcome the main obstacles in implementing a CSR program is by creating a multi-partnership between governments, businesses and community organizations. By applying the multi-partnership system, then the CSR will be more focus, not overlapping, and mutually support each other."

According to Yanti T. Koestoer, existing problems in Indonesia are too big to be solved by one particular party, so that all parties should cooperate with each other.”With the cooperation of all parties, besides generating an understanding the concept of CSR, it will also create efficiency of time, effort, and cost so the implementation would be more manageable," she added.

System and Instrumentation on CSR. Why We need it

When the companies determine that CSR strategy and actions should be embedded in triple bottom-lines, system and instrumentation of CSR should be predetermined. Some companies put efforts to enhance staff capability in internal or external workshops and trainings, others disseminate CSR activities in their internal meetings. Bisnis Harus Bertanggung Jawab Pada Lingkungan

Source: Kompas, 31 Agustus, 2010
